Abstract | Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of a multiphase AlSi12Cu4MgNi2 alloy under high temperature exposure in a wide range of 200 degrees C to 425 degrees C were investigated. The results showed that the major precipitate theta' in matrix grew coarser, then transformed to theta as the exposure temperature increased from 200 degrees C to 350 degrees C, and it precipitated again after exposed at 425 degrees C due to the natural ageing effect. Precipitates containing Mn and Si formed at 300-350 degrees C. The yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and matrix hardness decreased as the exposure temperature increased until 300 degrees C where both UTS and YS reached the minimum values, and they increased as the exposure temperature increased to 425 degrees C. The effect of Si and intermetallic phases on tensile damage mechanism was also studied using in-situ tensile tests. It was found that the damage initiated by Si and intermetallic phases cracking and the cracking increased as strain increased. The coalescence of those micro-cracks led to the macroscopic failure of the alloy. Based on the damage mechanism a relationship between strength and phases volume fraction and matrix hardness was established. The predicted strength was in good agreement with the experimental results. |
