Study on elastic modulus and fracture toughness of an EB-PVD thermal barrier coatings

摘要The elastic modulus and fracture toughness of an EB-PVD thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) were evaluated with Knoop and Vickers indentation technique. It is found that the Vickers microhardness and elastic modulus values of the TBCs decrease with increasing indentation load and approach a steady state value of 6.3 GPa and 172 GPa respectively under an indentation load of 2.94 N. The indentation fracture toughness measured for the TBCs at an indentation load of 9.8 N show a large scatter with the average value about 1.81 MPa(.)m(1/2), which could be attributed to the effect of microstructural inhomogeneity on the local crack resistance.
