Characterization of mushy zone properties of AZ6X magnesium alloys

摘要Mushy zone properties of AZ6X(X=0, 2, 4, 5, 6) alloys were characterized and analyzed by using cooling curve thermal analysis method and continuous torque measurement technique. The results show that T-n1 (the first characteristic temperature of primary crystal nucleation), T-n2 (the second characteristic temperature of primary crystal nucleation) and T-ch (the temperature of dendritic coherency) decrease with increasing zinc content, while the temperature difference of (T-n1 - T-n2) increases slowly and the temperature difference of (T-n2 - T-ch) almost remains constant. The f(s-ch) (the solid fraction of dendritic coherency) of AZ6X alloys is about 0.27-0.35, in which AZ60 and AZ66 alloys have higher f(s-ch) and AZ62 alloy has the lowest f(s-ch). It is also indicated that T-pk (the temperature of dendritic packing) decreases slowly and tau(pk) (the shearing strength of dendritic packing) increases first and then decreases when zinc content increases. The f(s-pk) (the solid fraction of dendritic packing) of AZ6X alloys is about 0.5-0.6, in which AZ60 and AZ66 alloys have lower f(s-pk) and AZ62 alloy has the highest f(s-pk). tau (the mushy zone shearing strength) of AZ62 alloy increases the most slowly as solid fraction increases. The results obtained by cooling curve thermal analysis method are comparable with those by continuous torque measurement technique.
