Effects of grain-boundary phases on hydrogen embrittlement of Fe-Ni-Cr austenitic alloys

摘要Dynamic mechanical analyzer was used to investigate the hydrogen embrittlement of two Fe-Ni-Cr austenitic alloys with and without boron. The effects of boron, hydrogen and grain-boundary phases on internal friction of the alloys were analyzed. OM and SEM were used to observe the microstructures and grain-boundary phases. The results showed that abundant Ni3Ti (eta) phases and a few carbides precipitated at grain boundaries in the alloy without boron, while only a few carbides precipitated at grain boundaries in the alloy with 0.008%B. Thermal hydrogen charging caused two new internal friction peaks at about 26 and 36 degrees C in the alloys with and without boron, respectively. And the peaks are resulted from the interaction between hydrogen atoms and the grain boundaries decorated by precipitates. Boron decreased the temperature and activation energy of the hydrogen induced internal friction peak, so it is suggested that the inhibition of the grain-boundary phase precipitation by boron reduces the ability of grain boundary to trap hydrogen atoms. As a result, boron lowered the ductility loss of the alloy.
