The turning point in Paris region of fatigue crack growth rate in titanium alloy

AbstractThe turning point in Paris region of fatigue crack growth rate has been investigated with TC4 lamellar microstructure. Positions of turning point Delta K-t under different microstructure dimensions have been compared, showing that beta grain size is the most important parameter to affect Delta K-t.This phenomenon is explained by analyzing the fracture features of different propagating stages, and result indicates that the appearance of turning point is induced by cracke tip plastic zone (CTPZ) growing larger than beta grain. No turning point appearing in fatigue crack growth rate curve of martensite structure reflects that beta grain is not the single reason to induce the turning point. Finally the real dimension of CTPZ is discussed in contrast to the calculated one.
