AbstractThe effects of test environments (vacuum, air, oxygen and hydrogen) on tensile properties and fracture behaviour of single crystal, columnar-grained crystal and recrystallized. polycrystal of a Ni-22.6Al(at%) alloy were studied. The single crystal and the columnar-grained crystal were grown unidiretionally by a high rate solidification method. They were not prone to embrittlement in air and were moderately embrittled by hydrogen. The recrystallized polycrystal was found to be susceptible to air, and the degree of recrystallization strongly influenced its embrittlement susceptibility and fracture behaviour. The experimental results were discussed in terms of the hydrogen embrittlement mechanism of environmental fracture.
