AbstractA kind of aluminide coating obtained by the low pressure chemical vapor deposition process was applied to K40S, a cobalt-base superalloy used in vane application. The coating consists largely of CoAl phase. The interlayer between the coating and substrate is chromium rich M23C6, carbide containing some tungsten and cobalt. The coating not only improved the hot corrosion resistance of K40S alloy, but also decreased its high temperature oxidation rate, thereby increasing remarkably the oxide scale adherence to underlying aluminide coating. The initial oxide scale was Al2O3. An oxide mixture of Al2O3, Cr2O3 and spinel CoCr2O4 was developed afterwards and accompanied the gradual dissolution of CoAl phase due to Al depletion.
