AbstractdFunctionally graded aluminum matrix composites (FGMMCs) reinforced with Sic particulate were fabricated by powder metallurgy. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the FGMMC were studied. There is no obvious interface between different layers, since Al matrix was melted together. However, the retardation of fatigue crack growth occurred from the region with high volume fraction of Sic to the low Sic regions. The retardation was explained by the analysis and observation of fracture surface and crack growth path.
