AbstractThe low-cycle fatigue behavior of Zr41.25Ti13.75Ni10Cu12.5Be22.5 bulk amorphous alloy was investigated in fully reversed stress control at room temperature. Both fully amorphous and partially crystallized specimens show neither cyclic hardening nor softening until final fracture. The fully amorphous alloy has a superior fatigue life than the partially crystallized one. From SEM observations of fracture surfaces and out surfaces of the specimens, the mechanism of stable cyclic strain response is explained. The stages of crack initiation, propagation and overload fracture zone are discernable for the two alloys. The crystalline phases in the amorphous matrix behave more as sites of crack initiation or porosity instead of obstacles retarding crack propagation.
