AbstractMagnesium alloys, with good biocompatibility and mechanical-compatibility, can be developed as next generation promising biomaterials. This paper summerizes the principle and the cutting-edge advances of alloying of magnesium alloys as degradable biomaterials. The effects of alloy elements on the material and biological properties of magnesium alloys are analyzed. The focus is laid on the influence of microstructure (grain size, secondary phase or intermetallic compound, long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase and quasi-crystal phase), heat treatment and surface oxide film on degradation and their critical progress on corrosion morphology and mechanism. Several outlooks on bio-magnesium alloys are proposed.
