Abstract | A dense alpha-Si3N4-based ceramic protective coating was successfully prepared on porous Si3N4 ceramics by a liquid infiltration and filling method using alpha-Si3N4 and B-Si-A-O glass raw powders. SEM and XRD analysis showed that the coating surface prepared at 1500 degrees C was covered by a dense B-Si-A-O glass layer. As the sintering temperature increased, the top glass layer disappeared completely, and a dense and rough alpha-Si3N4-based ceramic coating, including primary alpha-Si3N4 and secondly O'-Sialon and B-Si-Al-O amorphous phase, was exposed on the surface. An intermediate layer was produced in the interface of coating and substrate, which indicated a strong interfacial bonding between them. The coatings displayed an excellent waterproof ability, and water absorption of the coated porous Si3N4 ceramics was only in the range of 3.5-8.6%. Among all the coatings, the coating prepared at sintering temperature of 1600 degrees C had a higher hardness and elastic modulus than the other two kinds of coatings, which made it have a better wear resistance, and its wear rate was only 0.21 x 10(-3) mm(3)/Nm after friction for 20 min.
