Abstract | Sulfur induced corrosion (SIC) is an important issue taking place in the heat transfer crevices between steam generator (SG) tubing and tube supports in pressurized water reactors (PWRs). Contemporary aspects of passivity, passivity breakdown, and localized corrosion induced by sulfur are reviewed, with an emphasis on corrosion mechanism at micro scale. The passive film properties can be altered in the presence of sulfur, these properties including semiconductivity, defect density, film dissolution rate and film composition. This review is also instructive to other corrosion systems including paper and petroleum industry, where the SIC is a ubiquitous phenomenon. |
