Abstract | In this study, a new type of coating filler was fabricated via activating the basalt scales by chemical etching and subsequently wrapping the etched scales with a layer of the urea-formaldehyde microspheres by self-assembly. The resulting fillers (EBUF) were used as the pigments in the epoxy resin to fabricate a robust and anticorrosive composite coating. The FT-IR, XRD, XPS and SEM analyses revealed that the EBUF hybrids formed the chemical bonding at the coating/filler interfaces which improved the compatibility between the filler and coating matrix. The tensile and EIS measurements demonstrated the EBUF hybrids effectively promoted the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the composite coating. |
