The SCC mechanism and SCC inhibition of stainless steels in acidic chloride solutions are studied. In order to clarify the SCC mechanism of austenitic stainless steels in acidic chloride solution, the mutual effects bewteen anodic dissolution and deformation are studied. The anodic dissolution process is greatly accelerated by deformation, the creep rate is enhanced and the plastic strength is reduced by anodic dissolution. The study of inhibitors on SCC mitigation of austenitic stainless steels shows that the inhibitors which greatly inhibite the SCC not only can inhibite the anodic dissolution process, but also can greatly reduce the accelerating effects of the deformation on the anodic dissolution and this gives additional evidence that the SCC of austenitic stainless steels is controlled by anodic dissolution.
