Hot corrosion behavior of IN718 alloy and its effect on mechanical properties

AbstractThe hot corrosion behavior of IN718 alloy in the mixed melted salts of 75%Na2SO4+25%NaCl at 650 degrees C for 100 h and its effect on the mechanical properties of the alloy have been investigated. The results show that the corrosion scale is made up of two layers. The top layer is mainly composed of Fe3O4, FeCr2O4 and Cr2O3, and the inner layer is mainly composed of Ni and nickel sulfide. Sulfur can easily diffuse along grain boundaries and hence sulfide is formed there. The immersion of the alloy in the mixed salts at 650 degrees C for 100 h hardly reduces the tensile properties at room temperature and the tensile strength at 650 degrees C, but decreases the tensile plasticity slightly, and the 650 degrees C, 700 MPa stress rupture properties noticeably due to the decohesion of grain boundaries by sulfur. The hot corrosion is accelerated when a stress is added. The hot corrosion process and the relationship among the stress, hot corrosion rate and mechanical properties are discussed.
