Influence of hydrogen on ultrahigh cycle fatigue properties of high strength spring steel 50CrV4

AbstractThree groups of specimens with different hydrogen contents (c) were obtained from three different heat treatment procedures: quenched and tempered (specimen QT, 0.6 x 10(-6)), annealed at 380 degrees C in a vacuum after QT (specimen VA, 0.2 x 10(-6)) and treated by high-pressure thermal hydrogen charging (HPTHC) after QT (specimen HPTHC, 2.5 x 10(-6)). SEM observation showed that the crack initiation sites are all at internal inclusion clusters under high cycle fatigue. The fatigue strength (sigma(w)) decreased according to sigma(0) - alpha exp(c) law with the increase of c. Basquin exponent in Basquin equation changed distinctly with the increase of c.
