Phase transformation of eta and sigma phases in an experimental nickel-based superalloy

AbstractBoth nodular sigma phase and platelet eta phase were found in the as-cast microstructure of an experimental nickel-based superalloy. The nodular sigma phase decomposed into gamma phase leaving serrated transformation interfaces between sigma and gamma during the heat treatment process. The formation mechanism of nodular sigma phase and platelet eta phase was investigated by analyzing the orientation relationship of sigma/gamma and eta/gamma. It was found that sigma phase nucleated and grew from the liquid during solidification in the interdendritic area. The eta phase had regular platelet morphology and definite orientation relationship with gamma phase, which indicated that it was formed by means of solid-state precipitation.
