ZrB2 has promising applications in industrial sectors such as machinery, chemistry, electronics and aerospace etc. due to its low density, high melting point, high thermal conductivity, good thermal shock resistance and low coefficient of thermal expansion. The research progress of preparation of ZrB2 by electrodeposition in molten salts is reviewed in the present paper. The electrochemical reduction mechanism of B（Ⅲ） and Zr（Ⅳ） in various molten salt systems and the electroreduction process of ZrB2 are discussed aiming to provide the understanding of basic principle of the technique for the preparation of ZrB2 by molten salt electrolysis. Meanwhile, future applications of electrodeposited ZrB2 are also prospected.
